Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who receives the services provided by Kids in Flight and where do they come from?

A: KIF exists to serve children and families with serious illnesses.  Most reside in the Cleveland and Akron areas or are served by a local hospital.  Some come to KIF from the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland.  Many have cancer, heart defects, brain tumors and other life-changing illnesses and disabilities.  Recommended ages are 5-18. To fly, a child must be able to safely sit in the seat of an unpressurized aircraft for thirty to forty minutes and be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Q: What services are provided by KIF?

A: Currently, the pinnacle event of KIF is Wings of Wonder (WOW).  WOW is a fun, totally free day out at Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland for families.

Q: What happens at a Wings of Wonder event?

A: There is a full slate of activities, something for everyone.  A typical event has games, crafts, interactive exhibits, face painting, balloon animals, air-brush tattoos, and much more.  A catered lunch is also provided.  Past lunches have included macaroni and cheese, hot dogs, chicken tenders, various salads, desserts and soft drinks.

Q: What about the "flight" part?

A: The pinnacle event at WOW is a sight-seeing tour over the Cleveland area.  Local volunteer pilots use their own planes to take families on a 15-20 minutes flight. Children get to view their world from a different perspective and learn a little about aviation.  KIF maintains extremely high safety standards and is proud of an exemplary safety record.

Q: What else does Kids in Flight do?

A: KIF is currently working on a children's book to be published sometime in early 2018.  KIF also is always on the lookout for opportunities to expand into other geographical areas and programs.  There are various other activities throughout the year as well. These include group outings to local ballparks and an annual Holiday Party with entertainment, food, crafts and a Santa visit.

Q: How can I get involved?

A: KIF is always seeking dedicated individuals to serve on various committees throughout the year.  There is a major need for people with fundraising and/or grant writing experience.
WOW requires approximately 90 volunteers to be successful.  You can REGISTER NOW to help at the upcoming event.
